Berg Lake

In September 2010, we did a three-day, two-night backpack trip to Berg Lake in Mount Robson Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada. John was 57 and I was 56.

This park is purported to have the best-maintained trails in the Canadian Rockies. I could believe it!

We passed the gorgeous Kinney Lake.

The trail took us by the beautiful Robson River, which would be our companion for the rest of the day. It originates in Berg Lake, our destination.

The trail then began its steep ascent. Along the way, we passed the stunning Falls of the Pool …

… and the magnificent Emperor Falls. We also began getting views of Mount Robson.

The trail leveled out after we completed the steep ascent.

Once at Berg Lake, we got a view of the Berg Glacier.

We camped that night near Berg Lake, which sits at the base of Mount Robson (12,972 feet), the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. We had a great view from our kitchen!

The next morning, we did a day hike up to Mumm Basin. We passed the appropriately named Toboggan Falls.

We enjoyed the view from the Mumm Basin Trail.

On our way back to camp, we took a short side trail for a view of the Robson Glacier.

That evening, we were treated to a stunning sunset!

The first thing we saw the next morning was snow on the top of our tent. We looked outside and it was as if winter had arrived overnight. There was snow everywhere, and it was still falling. Fortunately, the park provided a day-use hut. We gratefully joined all the other backpackers there to eat our breakfast in a dry spot.

It continued to snow as we headed down the trail. However, it turned to rain when we lost enough elevation. The weather began to clear by the time we reached Kinney Lake.

We were so grateful we had such good weather for our hike up. This was a short trip, but between the waterfalls and the views, it felt like something much bigger.
