In May 2014 we did a two-day, one-night backpack trip on the Chinle Trail in the Southwest Desert of Zion National Park, Utah. John was 61 and I was 60.
We don’t normally do such short backpack trips. However, we were working toward a goal – to hike every trail within Zion National Park.

This trail was a dramatic change from the close confines and wet darkness of our recent backpack trip down the Narrows.

The views were quite expansive and a change of pace from the more commonly visited Zion valley.

The views also included the backsides of prominent features seen from the valley such as the Court of the Patriarchs.

We camped not far from Coalpits Wash …

… and ate our supper enjoying the coolness around Coalpits Spring.

John took the opportunity to try his hand at night photography but readily admitted he had a lot to learn. He was already thinking of purchasing yet another camera, one better suited to the task.

We hiked out the next morning down Coalpits Wash.

This was a nice, relaxing little trip. One thing we like about our goal of hiking every trail in Zion is that it takes us places we might not have gone otherwise.
