Trail Run to Cerro Torre, Argentina

In December of 2003, John celebrated his 50th birthday with a trip to Patagonia. He toured with Andes Adventures, and the trip included four trail runs. This is his account of one of them.

Cerro Torre is even more elusive than Mount Fitz Roy. It is just a little farther west and catches more of the bad weather. The trailhead is right in El Chaltén, and some of the trekkers joined the runners today.

The trail goes up the Rio Fitz Roy valley and climbs up a terminal moraine to Laguna Torre. Cerro Torre is lost in the clouds up Glaciar Torre on the other side of the lake.

Lots of icebergs sheared off Glaciar Torre and floated to the end of Laguna Torre.

On the way out, I climbed to a mirador above the Rio Fitz Roy valley for one last look to try and see Cerro Torre.
